Beebe Library Hosts Community Reading Event Featuring Books On
Bullying, Teen Dating Violence, and Domestic Violence

SEEN IT?
FELT IT?
DONE IT?
How does violence affect your life?

Throughout the month of May 2010 Wakefield residents of all ages will be invited to learn more about what forms of violence are present in our community, and how all of us are affected by violent behavior. The Beebe Library, in collaboration with the Wakefield Alliance Against Violence, will make available multiple copies of books that examine themes of youth bullying, teen dating violence and domestic violence. This shared reading experience will be the basis for our community to take a hard look at the scope and impact of violence in our midst.

For younger children and their families, a Story Walk will feature displays of different children's books that show the way violence, particularly bullying, is present in the lives of young children. Story Walks encourage reading and healthy physical activity while giving children and their families an opportunity to learn about and consider bullying and helpful ways of responding to bullying. Story Walks are planned for the Spaulding Street Playground, and participating storefronts along Main Street, and will be set up on selected weekends in May.

School aged readers will be able to choose from specially developed reading lists in their schools, or from the library's lists of suggested readings. Reader's guide questions as well as follow up discussion groups will be an additional resource for these young and young adult readers to use in examining the role violence can play in classroom life, peer and social media interactions, and teen dating. Film nights are planned at the library to see how the movies are dealing with themes of violence in young people's lives.

Adult readers will be encouraged to choose from several well known authors, including Anita Shreve (Strange Fits of Passion), Jodi Picoult (Picture Perfect), and Sara Hall (Drawn to the Rhythm: A Passionate Life Reclaimed), whose works depict the sometimes hidden violence of intimate relationships, with its threats of violence and controlling behavior. Book discussion sessions are planned for several evenings in May.

Additional events planned for May include a lecture presented by the Wakefield Parent Partnership on adolescent bullying and exclusion, and a Rape and Assault Defense (RAD) training presented by the Wakefield Police Department. Dramatic readings, community singing and film presentations will also be held at the Unitarian Church. Details on dates and specific reading lists will be available in March.
